What is the difference between Moissanite, Zircon and Diamond?

Table of Contents

What is moissanite diamond?

The chemical name of moissanite diamond is synthetic silicon carbide. Its appearance is very similar to that of diamond. You need to observe its contents with a magnifying glass at least 10 times to identify it. It is the latest imitation of the diamond.

Moissanite diamond is a kind of natural mineral carbon and silicon, which has been cultivated for nearly ten months in a specific environment to form a new mineral. Its main components and characteristics are similar to those of diamonds, difficult to distinguish by naked eyes. It shows the characteristic reaction of diamonds as tested with a tester.  The reason for the popularity of moissanite diamond is very simple. It’s beautiful and flashy. It looks very fashion.

What’s the difference between a diamond and a Moissanite?

Diamond is a kind of carbon mineral, which grows naturally underground. Its output is very low, which is the reason why diamond is expensive. It is a natural gem!

Moissanite was first found in a meteorite in outer space, which is a small natural ore. The amount of natural Moissanite in nature is tiny. They are extremely small, and can not be made into jewelry.

The difference between moissanite diamond and a real diamond

First of all, moissanite diamond is not formed naturally but is synthesized in an artificial laboratory. The scientific name is synthetic carborundum. Because it is artificial, after many years, the technology will gradually mature, and the price will be reduced, just like synthetic ruby and sapphire today.

Diamond is a natural product and is a kind of non-renewable resource. Over time, it will be more and more scarce. We all know that rare is expensive. The color of the moissanite diamond is yellow, mostly in i-k colour, while the natural diamond has yellow, white and D-N color. The dispersion of Moissanite is higher than that of diamond, which makes its “fire color” more fragmentary and colorful. The difference between fire color and diamond is obvious from the pavilion so that the fire color will be exaggerated, and its brightness is slightly lower than that of diamond.

What is zircon?

Zircon, also known as zircon, is called hyacinth in Japan. It is a December birthday stone, symbolizing success. It is one of the oldest minerals on earth.

As you know, many things can be denatured after heat treatment, and so can zircon. If the common type zircon is heated to a certain extent, it will become colourless and transparent crystal.

Zircon has two kinds: natural and artificial, and its chemical composition is also different. The hardness of natural zircon is slightly lower than that of synthetic zircon.

Man-made zircon, or “cubic zirconia”, was first synthesized by scientists of the former Soviet Union in the 1970s. It is usually referred to as this kind of zircon. Its color, refractive index and hardness are similar to diamonds.

Zircon has strong birefringence. It has two refractive indexes, and the difference between the two refractive indexes is significant. When the finished zircon is observed with a magnifying glass, it can be seen from the top that there are obvious double shadows between the bottom surface and the edge line.

The thermal conductivity of diamond is very high. It is easy to distinguish it from zircon by using the thermal conductivity meter. The breath test can easily distinguish the two. When you breathe on the gem, the fog on the diamond surface dissipates quickly, while the zircon is slower. The diamond section is as bright as new under a magnifying glass, while the zircon section is generally pitted.

How to quickly distinguish zircon from diamond?

Transparency test: if you draw a line on the paper and place the “diamond” on the paper, you can see that line through the “diamond”, it is not a diamond because the diamond will reflect 100% of the light, so you should not be able to see anything.

Humidity test: the gas diffuses to the ore very fast. The surface of a diamond is so smooth that it can’t hold water and condensation.

Defect test: carefully observe the ore with a magnifying glass. If you can see some minor defects inside the ore, then it is a natural diamond. Fake diamonds are always very pure, obvious.

UV test: if there is high-end equipment, it can be observed by UV. If it can change color, it is a natural diamond because the real diamond is reactive to UV.

What is a diamond?

Diamond refers to the polished diamond, a natural mineral and the original stone of diamond. In short, a diamond is a kind of elemental crystal composed of carbon formed under high-pressure conditions and high temperature in the deep part of the earth. Diamond is beautiful and rare. It is a symbol of love and loyalty, representing eternal love.

Diamond is a gift buried in the deep mantle of nature. It has experienced tens of thousands of years of high temperature and intense pressure to produce a bright and complex temperament, with crystal clear texture and bright light.

The hardness of diamond symbolizes the constancy of love, the purity of diamond symbolizes the purity of love, the brilliance of diamond symbolizes the warmth of love, and the uniqueness of diamond symbolizes people’s single-minded love. Therefore, it is most suitable to use diamonds to represent a sincere and constant heart.

Diamond is the hardest and simplest gem in the world. It is a natural crystal with cubic structure composed of carbon. Its composition is the same as that of coal, pencil lead and sugar. Carbon crystallizes to form graphite (black) under high temperature and pressure, and precious diamond (colorless) under high temperature, extremely high pressure and reducing environment (usually a kind of anoxic environment).

Since the discovery of diamonds in India, some people have found diamonds on rivers and beaches. The original rock containing diamonds in the upper reaches of the river is weathered and broken, and the diamonds are carried downstream with the current. The heavy diamonds are buried in the gravel.

Moissanite diamond is a combination of carbon and silicon minerals through cultivation. Its cultivation process is a high risk, long time and low output.

How to synthesize and cultivate moissanite diamond?

In the process of artificial cultivation, carbon and silicon will grow naturally. It’s the same as seed. The seeds that used to be the same size as soybeans were cultivated over some time.

Grown environment for natural diamond and moissanite

Moissanite diamond is the world’s top naturally cultivated “diamond”.

1. Moissanite diamond is a kind of natural mineral carbon and silicon, which has been cultivated for nearly ten months in a specific environment to form a new mineral. Its main components and characteristics are similar to those of diamond, which is difficult to distinguish by the naked eye. It can use a diamond tester to check

2. The brightness and refractive index of moissanite diamond are higher than that of diamond, making it the brightest gem in the world. Rare is the fire colour, dazzling temptation, become the focus of attention. Its hardness is as high as 9.25, second only to diamonds. It is the second hardest gem in the gem industry. It can maintain its brightness and clarity when worn normally, and its fire color characteristics remain unchanged.

Moissanite tester

Therefore, synthetic Moissanite has the same wear resistance and eternal characteristics as natural diamond and has a more brilliant fire colour than natural diamond. Even if it is detected by an ordinary thermal conductivity meter, it will be judged as a natural diamond, which is very difficult for comment consumers to determine.

So, how to distinguish diamond from moissanite diamond?

Measurement of specific gravity

The specific gravity of moissanite diamond is different from that of natural diamond. The particular gravity of diamond is 3.52, while that of moissanite stone is only 3.22. If conditions permit, the moissanite drill that has not been inlaid can be tested with methyl iodine specific gravity solution (specific gravity 3.32). The two can be easily distinguished.

Hardness measurement

Although the hardness of moissanite diamond is as high as 9.25, it is still different from natural diamond. Therefore, the diamond hardness tester will leave scratches on the Moissanite stone’s surface. Still, for natural diamond, there is no way for the hardness tester to go scratches on its surface.

Observation

Faceted edge ghosting: this can be the simplest way to distinguish natural diamond from moissanite diamond, which can be completed with a 10 times magnifying glass. Because natural diamond is a single refraction gem, there is no way to see double image with 10 times magnifying glass. However, the moissanite diamond is a birefringent gem. When viewed from the crown’s kite facet to the bottom tip under a 10x magnifying glass, the phenomenon of ghosting can be seen. If you can see the double image, it means that this is not a diamond. It’s easy to learn.

Polishing lines

The polishing lines on the waist of Moissanite are parallel to each other, completely different from diamonds. Moreover, due to the difference of different directions, the polishing direction should be adjusted continuously in the polishing process of a diamond. At the same time, Moissanite can be polished in the same direction. It is especially obvious between adjacent facets.

Content

The content of the diamond is different from that of Moissanite. There are some inclusions in all the identified Moissanite, which are arranged in needle-like parallel. In some moissanites, thin parallel lines of reflection can be seen.

If worn as a general decoration, Moissanite can be said that it has no shortcomings – it is cheap and has the nature of natural diamond. But if you want to collect investment or keep value, moissanite diamond is not ideal. After all, it is synthetic, and its price is bound to be affected by technological development and production. Compared with natural diamonds, it is still quite different.
